Smart Cities and Safer Roads: How AI and IoT Are Transforming Urban Transportation

Traffic accidents and congestion, noise and air pollution – these are just a few of the major consequences of transportation on human health and the environment. And yet, societies must be able to keep people moving. That’s why governments and businesses are increasingly working together to steer transportation and urban mobility toward a safer, cleaner future.

Levi9 is also exploring how we can contribute our technical expertise to advance critical sustainability goals and help shape the next generation of solutions. Here are some of the innovative developments we’re following.

Sustainable urban planning

We recently attended the 2024 Intertraffic Amsterdam Summit, which highlighted cutting edge initiatives in Smart Cities, shared mobility, traffic management, road safety and environmental improvements. One compelling concept presented during the summit is Multimodal Mobility Hubs. These move parking lots from dense city centers to reduce traffic and carbon emissions. Concrete lots can then be transformed into living and recreational spaces.

The hubs also offer a viable alternative to private car use by integrating various forms of electric transportation options in central locations. Many of these projects are already being implemented in C40 cities, where leaders are committed to halving carbon emissions by 2030 and building healthier, more equitable communities.

Another initiative is improving urban living with IoT and digital twin technologies. This involves combining vast amounts of data for dynamic city planning and enhancing citizen engagement through digital platforms. A common challenge in urban development is that solving one problem can inadvertently create bottlenecks or issues elsewhere. Now, using digital twin technology, governments and stakeholders can evaluate projects holistically, running various scenarios to see real-time effects on an entire area.

Our experts already have hands-on experience with this in our collaboration with Future Insight on the Clearly Hub. This Open Urban platform harnesses the power of advanced AI, including digital twins, in a secure, scalable and flexible digital ecosystem. We recognize the vast opportunities to transform public services and infrastructure with these technologies.

Traffic safety gets a boost from AI

AI and IoT are powerful tools for analyzing traffic patterns, optimizing roads, and predicting potential accidents. One company introduced a monitoring system that anticipates and prevents collisions by evaluating the velocity, mass, and trajectory of moving objects. It was impressive to see a demonstration of how this system can make predictions and take actions to deter accidents.

Other practical technological possibilities include advanced sensors on roads and cars that report accurate weather and road conditions in real time. AI-powered traffic management solutions can optimize the timing of traffic lights and highway speeds, depending on road conditions. These solutions have great potential to enhance road safety, streamline traffic flows and reduce emissions.

One of the more futuristic ideas uses AI analytics to assess the mental and emotional states of drivers on the road. Cities are now extensively equipped with cameras, covering nearly every aspect of urban life. These cameras collect real-time data, which, when analyzed by AI, can monitor drivers to see if they are impaired, distracted or experiencing emotions like sadness and anger. This is important because emotional instability in drivers can lead to serious incidents. While cameras don’t directly detect emotions, the AI applies machine learning to behavioral patterns to infer states like distraction or distress.

Working together for a better mobility future

These latest groundbreaking trends and technologies indicate that a smoother, greener future of transportation isn’t far down the road. We aim to stay ahead of the curve as a technology partner for mobility and transportation projects and look forward to helping turn pioneering visions into reality. Let’s innovate together to create smarter, safer, and more sustainable mobility solutions for tomorrow.
